    The Tuesday Twist: 20 June

With all the rain Edinburgh has been receiving over the last few weeks, nature is in full bloom. It seems as though Auld Reekie herself is embracing Pantone's Colour of the Year: Greenery. This week we have devoted our entire blog to all things green!

    History of Green

Greenery has inundating the latest trends and home decor ideas and is synonymous with springtime, growth and nature. Given it's history, it comes as no surprise that much of trending decor incorporates plant derived prints and colour tones.

In Ancient Egypt, green was the symbol of regeneration and rebirth.

The Ancient Egyptian god Osiris, ruler of the underworld and of rebirth and regeneration, was typically shown with a green face. (Tomb of Nefertari, 1295–1253 BC).

To the Romans it was the colour of Venus, the goddess of gardens, vegetables and vineyards.

Ancient Roman fresco of Flora, or Spring, from Stabiae (2nd century AD)

In his book GREEN: The History of a ColorFrench art historian Michel Pastoureau takes an in depth look at the history of this verdant shade. From classical roots to modern uses, the colour green remains a prominent fixture in trending decor.

    Bringing Greenery Inside

The colour green offers a soothing appeal and when incorporated into the home it can evoke a sense of renewal.

Hurd and Honey have pieced together very convincing evidence as to 'Why Every Home Needs a Green Wall.' Here are a few of our favourite rationales:

    • Green walls will warm your home in the cooler months, and cool your home in the warmer months.
    • Green walls and plants combine beautifully.
    • Green walls, even darker shades, can make a smaller space feel larger.
    • Green walls give the impression that life is lived healthier, more organic and pure.
    • Green walls inspire imagination, green is open-minded, and friendly.
    • Green walls help neutrals stand out better than they would against white walls.

    Check out the full article:

We just love the idea of incorporating living plant life into the home in unique ways, such as this living moss wall!

      Spring Hygge Revival

A major trend that gained popularity in the UK this past winter is Hygge, pronounced HUE-gah. This Danish born phenomenon is centred on a way of living that promotes an overall well-being and sense of happiness. From creating a cosy home filled with relaxing colours and ambient lighting to devoting more tech-free time to friends and family, it's no surprise that Denmark consistently rates among the happiest nations in the world!

In The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy LivingMeik Wiking (author and CEO of the Happiness Research Institute) emphasises that the lifestyle is not just for cold weather but something to practice year-round. He breaks down the concept of hygge into 10 core components:

Atmosphere, Presence, Pleasure, Equality, Gratitude, Harmony, Comfort, Truce, Togetherness, and Shelter.

Creating a hyggelit atmosphere in your home is a great way to start embracing this relaxed lifestyle. Although much of the this lifestyle is suited for the long winter months, we have gathered some of our favourite easy tips to incorporate hygge into spring.

       Candles and Ambient Lighting

“There is no faster way to get to hygge than to light a few candles.”-Meik Wiking

Citrusy scents such as grapefruit are the perfect way to waken up your senses by adding a fresh burst of energy to any room. If you want to keep the heat level down try using tealights in place of larger jar or pillar candles.

With the days getting longer and and the weather warming, it's time to open up those drapes and windows and let in more sunshine! Not only does natural light make everyone feel warmer and more relaxed, it's very healing for both you and your indoor plants!

      Eating Fresh

Hygge cuisine should be hearty yet healthy. Choose fresh ingredients that promote a healthy and happy lifestyle while filling your body with goodness.
If you are looking for a light breakfast treat that incorporates fresh fruit then you must try these Glazed Lemon and Poppy Seed Muffins with Honey Granules or these

      Jumbo Blueberry Crumb Muffins.

What can be fresher than having your own array of herb plants within easy reach? This charming and practical Hanging Indoor Herb Garden is a great way to bring nature inside and add the perfect flavouring to your meals.

If you prefer to buy your fresh foods as you need them, why not take advantage of a local farmer's market? Not only can you stock up on kitchen essentials but strolling through the market is a great way to connect socially with friends and family which is a pillar of the hygge lifestyle.

Not sure where to go? Be sure to check out this article featuring renowned farmer's markets all across Scotland courtesy of Scotsman Food and Drink. It features our own local Edinburgh market which is held at the footsteps of Edinburgh Castle!

      Colour Scheme and Decor

To create calm and soothing environments shades of tranquil colours such as white and grey, geometric prints and decor and a splash of nature make the perfect hygge-inspired interior. Equally as important is the idea of minimalism and a clutter-free environment. Start to transform your living environment by first having a good 'Spring clean' and then incorporating key pieces of decor that create a cosy atmosphere.

We just love our nature inspired Personalised Photo Frames and think they are the perfect fit for a hygge interior! Frame your favourite memories with family or friends and add your own message for a truly personal touch. Available in a gold, bronze, pewter and champagne silver brushed metallic finish.

Self-Care and a Hint of Indulgence

Last but certainly not least, a core component of a true hygge lifestyle is looking after oneself and both physically and mentally. It's important to carve out some alone time to unwind and relax. So light some candles, play some relaxing music, have a delicious cup of coffee or tea and fully embrace a little self-indulgence!

      A Prickly History

When you think of 'Scotland', perhaps the most synonymous symbol, second only to tartans and kilts, is the thistle. So just how did this prickly weed become the beloved Flower of Scotland? .

Click HERE to find out more!

      Legend of the Scottish Thistle

Adopted as the Emblem of Scotland during the rein of Alexander III (1249 -1286), legend has it that an Army of King Haakon of Norway, intent on conquering the Scots landed at the Coast of Largs at night to surprise the sleeping Scottish Clansmen. In order to move more stealthily under the cover of darkness the Norsemen removed their footwear.

As they drew near to the Scots it wasn't the only thing hiding under the cover of darkness. For one of Haakon's men unfortunately stood on one of these spiny little defenders and shrieked out in pain, alerting the Clansmen of the advancing Norsemen. Needless to say the Scots who won the day.

      'Thistle-do Nicely'

If you are planing a traditional Scottish wedding ceremony, our Scotch Thistle Save the Dates are the perfect fit! Personalise yours by adding the names of the bride and groom, as well as the location of your wedding and of course, the date to save!

Check out our entire range of Save the Dates HERE

Thistles make a great addition to your bouquets and buttonholes! We love these arrangements that capture the Scottish spirit and add that subtle pop of colour!

One of our favourite, albeit lesser-known wedding traditions is the groom gifting a Luckenbooth brooch to his bride on their wedding day. Subsequently, this Scottish love token would be pinned to the shawl of their first child to protect it from “evil spirits.”

These brooches, which commonly feature a crowned heart or two intertwined hearts, get their name from Edinburgh's first permanent shops known as 'Luckenbooths' or basically 'locked booths.' Dating from the 16th century these stores sold trinkets and housed jewellery workers and other trades.

Find out more about the Luckenbooth HERE

      Order of the Thistle

The Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh houses several artefacts pertaining to the Order of the Thistle dating from George V's reign. Thought to be founded by James III in 1687, this ancient and noble Order is a merit of chivalry which is bestowed to those who have made an outstanding contribution to the life of Scotland and the greater United Kingdom.

The motto of the order is: Nemo me Impune Lacessit, which means ‘no-one provokes me with impunity’ or who dares meddle with me. It is considered the motto of Scotland and of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

      Spiny Delights

While thistles are among the hardest to gather of wild foods, many variations are known to provide high levels of important major nutrients. If you fancy embracing your inner forager, this article courtesy of Permaculture may provide you with some valuable insight.

If the thought of collecting and preparing the thistle sounds a bit daunting or the idea of actually eating this spiny weed is just not your cup of tea, you can always enjoy it as a garnish!

      It's All About the Flowers!

April Showers have definitely brought the May flowers to Edinburgh! Everywhere you look, the site of budding crocuses and daffodils as well as rows of gorgeous cherry blossoms line the historic city streets.

      Hanami 花見

Did you know that the happiness and enjoyment of seeing blossoms in full bloom (in particular the cherry blossom) is a traditional Japanese custom known as Hanami? Our friends at Edinburgh World Heritage have shed some light on this intriguing concept.
If you are looking for the perfect place to take in these local floral beauties, why not take a stroll through Edinburgh's historic Royal Botanical Gardens?
The original garden was established in 1670 and during the 20th century acquired three Regional Gardens – the mountainous Benmore in Argyll; Dawyck in the wooded hills of the Scottish Borders and Logan on the Gulf Stream-warmed southern peninsula of Dumfries & Galloway. Together they represent one of the world’s largest living collections of plants!
